Apple’s Bold Move, Free AI Features vs. Rivals’ Paywalls

2 min read

In a surprise move, Apple announced that it would not charge subscriptions for its artificial intelligence services, against recent moves by Samsung and Google. Although Apple had been relatively late to the AI fray, the company’s chief executive emphasized that AI is free now and will remain that way into the future for Apple’s customers.

Cook said Apple considers AI no different from other core integrations within its ecosystem, such as iMessage or FaceTime. That means iPhone owners won’t have to pay a premium to access more advanced AI capabilities, unlike owners of Samsung Galaxy phones, who may start seeing additional fees for AI capabilities starting in 2026.

Apple Intelligence features are already deployed on the iPhone 16 and 15 Pro models in the US, keeping most data processing local on the device. More complex tasks are processed on the Apple Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, but the company relies more on “on-device” computing for a seamless user experience. Therefore, the company is paying for the cloud infrastructure cost to not charge users with extra fees.

Implications for Apple Users

Although there is no guarantee that AI features will remain free for life, Cook’s comments indicate this monetizing of integrated tools is not top of mind at Apple right now. That might further cement the loyalty of iPhone users and make new consumers join the Apple ecosystem by offering it cost-free compared to competitors’ strategies.

Apple seems to focus on the accessibility and deep integration of AI into the user experience, which could potentially set a new standard within the industry. Given how rapidly technology is changing today, making AI features free could be one of Apple’s biggest competitive differentiators.
