iOS 19 Brings Updates to All iPhone Models, But Some iPads Are Left Behind

2 min read

In a surprise and welcome move, Apple has announced that all iPhone users will benefit from the new iOS 19. Even older models like the iPhone XS and XR, launched in 2018, will receive this update. This is great news for iPhone users who will now have access to the latest features and security improvements without having to buy a new device.

The news isn’t quite so good for iPad users, though. Although many iPads will be getting the new iPadOS 19, some older models, like the 7th generation iPad from 2019, won’t be compatible anymore. It seems the cut-off for iPads is the A12 chip, so any model with an A10 or older chip won’t be able to upgrade.

Apple’s exclusion of some iPads may be due to the need to provide very good performance for the features introduced with iPadOS 19, which may be quite resource-intensive. All the same, this is quite a disappointment for owners of previous generations of iPads that were expecting to take advantage of new software improvements.

What’s New in iOS 19?

iOS 19 promises to bring a range of new features and major improvements for iPhone users, including:

  • Advanced Focus Mode: Greater customization options to reduce distractions.
  • New Interactive Widgets: These will allow quicker and more useful interactions directly from the home screen.
  • Siri Enhancements: The voice assistant Siri will become even smarter and capable of responding to more complex requests.
  • Enhanced Security: More layers of security to protect user data.

Latest iPhone and iPad Models

iPhones:

  • iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro: Featuring the latest A18 Bionic chip, improved camera systems, and enhanced battery life.
  • iPhone SE (4th Generation): Expected to include a USB-C port, a 48-megapixel rear camera, and an OLED screen.

iPads:

  • iPad Pro 13-inch and 11-inch (M4): Equipped with the powerful M4 chip, supporting Apple Intelligence AI features.
  • iPad Air 13-inch and 11-inch (M2): Offering improved performance and support for the latest Apple Pencil.
  • iPad Mini (7th Generation): Running on the A17 Pro processor, compatible with Apple Intelligence AI features.

It remains to be seen how iPhone and iPad users will welcome these changes and to what extent they will feel comfortable with the new functionalities. One thing is for sure, though: Apple keeps on making life easier, even when this means that older hardware cannot keep up with newly set technological standards.
