Mercedes-Benz Develops Solar Paint to Transform the EV Industry

2 min read

In a bold move that could rewrite the script on electric vehicle technology, Mercedes-Benz is developing a solar paint that promises a new frontier of efficiency and sustainability. This photovoltaic paint, applied as a paste, boasts an impressively thin layer of just 5 micrometers, equivalent to a human hair’s width.

Cutting-Edge Technology in a Thin Layer

This paint can coat up to 11 square meters of a vehicle’s surface and generate enough energy to power it for as many as 7,456 miles per year under perfect conditions. It features a protective layer of nanoparticles that lets through 94% of the solar energy, which results in a remarkable efficiency of 20%.

Benefits and Impact

The energy generated by this revolutionary paint is fed into the vehicle’s high-voltage battery, even when the car is off. This not only enhances range but also reduces the need for frequent charging, making electric vehicles more convenient and efficient.

Adaptability and Versatility

Another major advantage of this technology is its flexibility. The solar paint can be applied to any vehicle surface, regardless of shape or angle, and weighs just 50 grams per square meter. This feature facilitates its integration into electric vehicle design, contributing to extended battery life without adding significant weight.
