According to recent information, Apple has “formally” started the development process of a foldable iPhone, with the goal of joining the rapidly expanding and highly profitable market of foldable phones.

What do “formally” mean? Most probably, it means the device already exists in prototype form, maybe in a number of candidate versions. Apple has probably already chosen the most promising variant and has already started the procedure of selecting component suppliers. This is what the source of this rumor says, as discussions held with a given screen supplier have shown that the company intends to manufacture a foldable phone.

Apple probably was just waiting for the right moment to release a foldable iPhone. With sales at Samsung falling, and consumers becoming bored with the “new” foldable models that had minimal changes from last year, an announcement on the subject from Apple would likely have quite an effect.

The good news is that Samsung is not in any hurry to innovate either. The South Korean manufacturer is working on improving the same aspects that Apple is: the reliability of foldable phones and reducing manufacturing costs to a more profitable level.

According to older revelations from July in The Information publication, Apple gave the codename “V68” to the iPhone Fold project, targeting the initial launch of a phone with a clamshell design-an alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr series. Speaking of the causes of successive delays, the same source assumed that an “obsession” by Apple might be one possible explanation-to get rid of the visible crease in the folding area of the screen.

Other leaks from the same South Korean site, Alpha Economy, suggested that Apple wants to release the first foldable iPhone in September 2026. It has already shifted some employees who were involved in the Vision Pro project to the division that deals with foldable phones. If negotiations with foldable screen suppliers have reached this point, though, there is every chance that this will come forward to next year.
